Doctor says pulling COVID vaccine for children would leave them vulnerable

BCP knows that childhood vaccines are essential for keeping children healthy. But growing misinformation and vaccine skepticism–including at the federal level–is putting children at risk.

BCP Founder Dr. Robyn Riseberg appears on CBS Boston discussing the importance of childhood vaccines, particularly for COVID-19. Despite a surge in summer COVID cases, Pfizer had just reported that the FDA could pull emergency authorization of the COVID vaccine for children under 5.

Riseberg explained that this uncertainty around the availability of COVID vaccines for small children makes it difficult for doctors to know how best to advise their patients. “We don’t know what’s coming down the pike,” she explained. But Riseberg stressed that the youngest children are the most vulnerable, which is why they receive so many vaccines early in life. Without COVID vaccines, these children will be at risk. “Young kids can’t wear a mask . . . we don’t have a way to protect them,” she said. Amid the uncertainty, Riseberg remained committed to vaccine access. She stressed that, as long as BCP has access to the COVID vaccine, BCP will be “recommending it and giving it up until the time that we are told that we can’t.”
